DESCRIPTION:Kilmartin Glen Guided Walks are FREE and take place every Wednesday at 1:00pm. \nOn our volunteer-led Guided Glen Walks you will visit many of the amazing ancient sites in Kilmartin Glen\, including the Linear Cairn Cemetery\, Nether Largie South Chambered Cairn and Temple Wood Stone Circle. They are a fun and friendly way to discover what makes this landscape so special! \nEach walk lasts between 2.5 and 3 hours\, using paths and crossing grassy fields\, which can be muddy. Weatherproof clothing and footwear are highly recommended. \nWe’re very sorry\, but the dogs allowed on our guided walks are registered assistance. \nUnder 18s are welcome to join us as long as they are accompanied by an adult and the walk content is suitable for age 10 and over. \nNumbers are limited to 20 people\, so booking is essential! DESCRIPTION:Join us on our long running and ever popular guided walks to the Trimontium Fort site. You can choose whether to do the full walk from Melrose to Trimontium\, or the shorter walk of the main site.\nFind out what life was like at the fort – for those who lived and worked there. Your guide will share what clues have been found to tell us about life at the fort through the fascinating discoveries made during various archaeological digs over the last century. Throughout\, you will be surrounded by the stunning\, Scottish Borders landscape\, views of the River Tweed and iconic Eildon Hills. \n\n\n\nFull Walk: 1.30pm | Short Walk: 2.30pm – 4.30pm\n\n\n\nFull Trimontium Walk: Duration 3.5 hours\nMeeting at the Trimontium Museum in the heart of Melrose\, your guide will take you on a leisurely walk past the historic Melrose Abbey and the ancient village of Newstead\, sharing gems of local history and connections to the Trimontium Fort site. \nAt the end of the walk\, your guide can escort you back to Melrose if you wish\, returning around 4.30pm \nShort Trimontium Walk: Duration 1.5 hours\nMeeting at the top of Newstead village\, just off the A6091 and beside the bus stop\, walkers who wish to do the shorter\, circular walk of the fort site\, can join the walk guide at 2.30pm. Focussing on the history and archaeology of the Roman Fort Site\, this is a circular route\, ending back at Newstead Village. \nUseful Information\nFor both the full walk and short walk\, we suggest you bring a drink\, wear sturdy footwear suitable for paths and fields\, and dress for the changeable Borders weather! Dogs are welcome on the walk\, just make sure you have water for them\, especially on warm days. There are no toilets en route\, except those that nature provides. \nFor the short walk\, parking is available on the verge of the gated road\, opposite the meeting point. Please do not park in any area reserved for residents. Public transport can also be used to reach the short walk start point. For up-to-date bus information\, please go to https://www.bordersbuses.co.uk. \nIf you don’t feel able to join the walk\, you can drive to Newstead or the Leaderfoot Viewpoint and walk a fairly easy route through the main part of the fort site\, using our information boards to guide you. Maps can be obtained from the Trimontium Museum\, Market Square\, Melrose (open daily 10am-4.30pm.) \nBooking for walks is essential. \nDrop-ins are accepted on the day if space is available\, although short walk participants must inform the museum if they plan to join in Newstead so we can inform the walk guide.

SUMMARY:Perth Charterhouse Dig 2026
DESCRIPTION:Hidden beneath the streets of Perth lies an unresolved medieval mystery. In AD 1429\, King James I set up Scotland’s only monastic house of the Carthusian Order on the edge of the booming royal burgh of Perth; they called it the Charterhouse after the home of the Carthusian Order at La Grande Chartreuse in the French Alps. At the heart of the monastery complex was a church priory described as one of the most lavishly decorated in the whole Kingdom of Scotland. Within this beautiful church\, James commissioned a new royal tomb for the Stewart dynasty and was buried there in AD 1437 following his brutal murder in Perth. 130 years later\, Perth’s Charterhouse was attacked and suppressed following a thundering sermon of reformation by John Knox in St John’s Kirk. After centuries of stone repurposing and urban development the exact location of Perth’s Charterhouse has been lost to the sands of time. \nInformed by Ground Penetrating Radar survey and archive documentary research\, a team of historians and archaeologists now think they have found traces of this missing medieval marvel buried deep beneath the streets of Perth. With support from local residents\, the Guildry Incorporation of Perth and Perth Society of Natural Science\, a dig team led by AOC Archaeology will undertake the first dedicated excavation to search for evidence of Perth’s Charterhouse this September. \nPerth visitors and residents are warmly invited to come along during the dig week to observe the excavations and catch up on the latest discoveries at the dig info station by the Carthusian Monastery Monument (at the corner of King and Hospital Streets). The Perth Charterhouse Project will be hosting two Open Days on Friday 18 and Saturday 19 September between 10am and 4pm with walking tours of the Charterhouse precinct at 10am and 2pm led by members of the Project team. Dig talks offering site orientation and discussion of the discoveries will take place at 11am and 3pm – all from the Carthusian Monastery Monument. Family friendly practical archaeological skills activities and artefact handling will also be available throughout the day. SUMMARY:The Forfar Witches Story: A Guided Walk
DESCRIPTION:The Forfar Witch Trials took place between 1661-1663 and involved 42 local people who were imprisoned and tortured on suspicion of witchcraft\, 22 women were found guilty of the crime and executed over the three-year period. \nExplore Forfar’s dark past and find out more about the story of the Forfar Witches on this guided walk. The walk will begin at the Meffan Museum & Art Gallery and will then cover connected sites on the streets of Forfar before returning to the museum where free refreshments will be provided. \nThe walk will last 1 hour including time for questions. \nSuitable for all abilities\, not suitable for under 8 years old. \nCost: £5.
