SUMMARY:Kilmartin Glen Guided Walks
DESCRIPTION:Kilmartin Glen Guided Walks are FREE and take place every Wednesday at 1:00pm. \nOn our volunteer-led Guided Glen Walks you will visit many of the amazing ancient sites in Kilmartin Glen\, including the Linear Cairn Cemetery\, Nether Largie South Chambered Cairn and Temple Wood Stone Circle. They are a fun and friendly way to discover what makes this landscape so special! \nEach walk lasts between 2.5 and 3 hours\, using paths and crossing grassy fields\, which can be muddy. Weatherproof clothing and footwear are highly recommended. \nWe’re very sorry\, but the dogs allowed on our guided walks are registered assistance. \nUnder 18s are welcome to join us as long as they are accompanied by an adult and the walk content is suitable for age 10 and over. \nNumbers are limited to 20 people\, so booking is essential! DESCRIPTION:Join us on our long running and ever popular guided walks to the Trimontium Fort site. You can choose whether to do the full walk from Melrose to Trimontium\, or the shorter walk of the main site.\nFind out what life was like at the fort – for those who lived and worked there. Your guide will share what clues have been found to tell us about life at the fort through the fascinating discoveries made during various archaeological digs over the last century. Throughout\, you will be surrounded by the stunning\, Scottish Borders landscape\, views of the River Tweed and iconic Eildon Hills. \n\n\n\nFull Walk: 1.30pm | Short Walk: 2.30pm – 4.30pm\n\n\n\nFull Trimontium Walk: Duration 3.5 hours\nMeeting at the Trimontium Museum in the heart of Melrose\, your guide will take you on a leisurely walk past the historic Melrose Abbey and the ancient village of Newstead\, sharing gems of local history and connections to the Trimontium Fort site. \nAt the end of the walk\, your guide can escort you back to Melrose if you wish\, returning around 4.30pm \nShort Trimontium Walk: Duration 1.5 hours\nMeeting at the top of Newstead village\, just off the A6091 and beside the bus stop\, walkers who wish to do the shorter\, circular walk of the fort site\, can join the walk guide at 2.30pm. Focussing on the history and archaeology of the Roman Fort Site\, this is a circular route\, ending back at Newstead Village. \nUseful Information\nFor both the full walk and short walk\, we suggest you bring a drink\, wear sturdy footwear suitable for paths and fields\, and dress for the changeable Borders weather! Dogs are welcome on the walk\, just make sure you have water for them\, especially on warm days. There are no toilets en route\, except those that nature provides. \nFor the short walk\, parking is available on the verge of the gated road\, opposite the meeting point. Please do not park in any area reserved for residents. Public transport can also be used to reach the short walk start point. For up-to-date bus information\, please go to https://www.bordersbuses.co.uk. \nIf you don’t feel able to join the walk\, you can drive to Newstead or the Leaderfoot Viewpoint and walk a fairly easy route through the main part of the fort site\, using our information boards to guide you. Maps can be obtained from the Trimontium Museum\, Market Square\, Melrose (open daily 10am-4.30pm.) \nBooking for walks is essential. \nDrop-ins are accepted on the day if space is available\, although short walk participants must inform the museum if they plan to join in Newstead so we can inform the walk guide.

DESCRIPTION:Every Saturday at 1.30pm\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThis Guided Walk will take us past ten stone circles (remains of Atlantic Roundhouses) and many other features including wildlife and wonderful scenery. The walk is roughly two miles long\, lasting around two hours on rough paths. \nPlease meet your guide\, Jeremy Fenton at the Museum Welcome Desk in good time for the walk to start at 1.30pm (we suggest by 1.20pm). \nAs numbers are limited please let us know if you wish to book on to a walk. The walk is free\, but donations are greatly appreciated. \nYou walk at your own risk and we encourage you to: \n\n\nWear sturdy footwear \n\n\nBe aware that the paths are rough and can be boggy and slidy if it has been raining. \n\n\nTuck your trousers into your socks and check for ticks after the walk. \n\nDress for the weather – bring layers and waterproofs.\n\nPrepare for the weather – bring a sun hat and lotion (you never know!). \n\n\nKeep hydrated – bring a drink and maybe even a snack. \n\n\nOnly come if you feel well and have a good\, general level of fitness.

SUMMARY:Old Scatness Tours - Fridays 10.15am\, 12.15pm and 2.30pm
DESCRIPTION:The Iron Age Broch and Iron Age Village at Old Scatness was an undisturbed\, pristine time capsule when first discovered in 1975\, as the result of a road being put through what was thought to be a natural mound.  The road was realigned to protect the site when it was identified as a broch by a local historian.  Some twenty years later\, excavations were initiated by Shetland Amenity Trust as part of an “Access to Heritage” project. From its inception\, the aim was to excavate the site to the highest possible standard\, while breaking down the perceived academic barriers of archaeology. \n\nOld Scatness Broch and Iron Age Village lay undiscovered beneath our feet for over a millennium. Come along for a guided tour and learn about the mystery\, myth and legend of this world class heritage site. The site is open for tours every Friday until 25 September. \nPlease note that the tour involves walking on gravel paths and grass where the ground surface may be uneven. There are narrow steps (with a handrail) into one of the buildings (optional). \nPlease note tours last approx. 45 mins to 1 hour

The walk will begin from the car park. \nParking \nThere is parking at Moncreiffe Hill Tay Car Park\,Moncreiffe Hill\, Perth\, PH2 8PT. The what3words for the location is ///quaking.jaundice.rocket. \nAccess \nThe northern Tay car park has the easiest access to the hillforts. Much of the path network is made up of wide\, stone-surfaced forest tracks with loops of different lengths and grades. The unsurfaced paths can be muddy and very steep in places\, especially the section to Moredun Fort. \nFacilities \nThere are no toilet facilities on site\, the nearest public toilets with disabled access are in Perth at Marshall Place\, Ropemakers Close and Perth Bus Station on Leonard Street. \nExtra things to know \n\nUnder 18’s must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.\nWell-behaved dogs welcome on a lead.\nPlease wear suitable clothing and footwear for a walk in the woods and on steep terrain. The group will be outdoors for around 2 hours\, which includes a half hour on exposed hilltop. Good waterproofs\, walking boots and warm layers are advised.

SUMMARY:Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings - Full Guided Tour and Museum 2026
DESCRIPTION:Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1\,500 years ago – with the Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society on these Sunday tours. \nLocated on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth\, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols\, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle\, once home to the Earls of Fife. \nThe Tour\nThe tour covers 5\,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave\, Doo Cave\, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave. \nThey can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. They can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking. \nThe Museum\nYou are very welcome to spend time looking round their Museum\, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour\, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm. \nAs well as telling the story of the caves\, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history\, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles. \nToilet facilities and refreshments are available. \nParking\nPlease note that there is no on-site parking at the Visitor Centre in The Haugh\, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes\, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. . \nDonations\nAll tours are given free of charge\, but as a voluntary organisation they encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable them to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.
