{"id":1276,"date":"2020-02-04T16:46:11","date_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:46:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/archaeologyscotland.org.uk\/heritage-resources-portal\/?p=1276"},"modified":"2020-02-04T16:46:11","modified_gmt":"2020-02-04T16:46:11","slug":"learning-resources-for-experimental-archaeology-learning-about-craft-and-technology-in-the-past-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.archaeologyscotland.org.uk\/heritage-resources-portal\/2020\/02\/04\/learning-resources-for-experimental-archaeology-learning-about-craft-and-technology-in-the-past-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Experimental Archaeology: Learning about Craft and Technology in the Past"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A suite of learning resources for a range of objects and technologies spanning from Mesolithic to modern times<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>In 2017-2019 ARCH ran<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archhighland.org.uk\/exp-menu.asp\">experimental archaeology workshops<\/a><\/strong>, exploring issues of craft and technology from Mesolithic to modern times. The workshops were filmed, and edited videos have been posted online describing the various crafts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Green woodworking<\/li>\n<li>Textiles through the Ages, focussing on tablet weaving<\/li>\n<li>Flint Knapping<\/li>\n<li>Carved Stone Balls<\/li>\n<li>Bronze Age Pottery<\/li>\n<li>Bronze Age Metalworking<\/li>\n<li>Bone and Antler Working<\/li>\n<li>Pictish Carved Stones<\/li>\n<li>Viking Ring Money<\/li>\n<li>Medieval Coinage<\/li>\n<li>Lead Seals and Ropemaking<\/li>\n<li>Telford Technology<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Blogs were also posted, providing insights and further reading. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.archhighland.org.uk\/experimental-archaeology.asp\"><strong>Videos and blogs can be accessed via the ARCH website.<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The objects produced in the workshops, augmented by a few extra real and replicas, were gathered into four loans boxes. A teacher and archaeologists then worked together to produce learning materials to go with the boxes.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.archhighland.org.uk\/exp-learning-resources.asp\">The resources consist of:<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Information Sheets(written by Lachlan &amp; Lynne McKeggie):\n<ul>\n<li>Object sheets. An A4 sheet about each object, with a picture of the object on the back.<\/li>\n<li>Crafting Technology Sheets (identified with the prefix CT). These A4 sheets describe the process of each of the crafts.<\/li>\n<li>When? Sheets. An A4 sheet with information about each period (Mesolithic to Medieval).<\/li>\n<li>Additional image sheets. A4 sheets which augment the above.<\/li>\n<li>Distribution maps. An A4 sheet describing the uses and pitfalls of the distribution maps.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li>Teaching Resources (written by Dave Peers):\n<ul>\n<li>Crafting Lesson plans. Five levels of lessons (nursery to upper secondary) relating to various crafts, including also a focus on artefacts relating to survival and technology.<\/li>\n<li>Individual object plans. Each box contains a suite of lesson plans for primary or secondary level with further ideas for lessons relating to individual objects.<\/li>\n<li>A self-guided lesson aimed mainly at adults.<\/li>\n<li>Lesson Resources.
