Online, easy wins for your professional development"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>This a living document that we&#8217;ll add to over time (last updated: Oct 5, 2020).<\/p>\n<p>Whether you&#8217;re an old hat or just starting out, online talks and courses are just so invigorating! Use them to get (re)motivated, remind yourself of key concepts or just for interest&#8217;s sake. This post emphasizes archaeology courses and heritage learning but includes other, more general courses.<\/p>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<h3>Where?<\/h3>\n<p>I recommend these online platforms to learn something new:<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/\">Future Learn<\/a> <\/strong>is a beautiful swirl of online platform and UK universities. Their &#8216;free online courses&#8217; <em>are<\/em> free to do, but you may need to pay to get a certificate to prove it. That said, I&#8217;ve had personal success in doing these courses. Is the course you&#8217;re interested in not on yet? No problem. Just hit the &#8217;email when this course starts&#8217; button on the course&#8217;s info page.<\/p>\n<p>The Open University offers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/\"><strong>OpenLearn<\/strong><\/a> (&#8216;free learning from the Open University&#8217;).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.edx.org\/\"><strong>EdX<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.coursera.org\/\">Coursera<\/a><\/strong> are the American equivalents of Future Learn.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thegreatcourses.co.uk\/\">The Great Courses<\/a><\/strong> offers US college-level courses and is aimed at Lifelong Learners.<\/p>\n<h3>Brush up on your archaeology -thanks to BAJR!<\/h3>\n<p>British Archaeological Jobs and Resources (BAJR) have long been essential to anyone interested in archaeology. Their <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bajr.org\/BAJREducation\/\">Education and Courses<\/a><\/strong> section is full of wonderful, key resources:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Good places to start are: the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bajr.org\/Employment\/UKTraining.asp\"><strong>Training Opportunities and Courses list <\/strong><\/a>and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.bajr.org\/BAJREducation\/UniversitiesSearch.asp\">Universities, Colleges and Courses Directory \u00a0<\/a><\/strong>These are kept up-to-date. Note the courses listed usually have fees.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/shop.bajr.org\/product\/archaeology-skills-passport\/\"><strong>Skills Passport<\/strong><\/a> &#8211; use this to create your own portfolio when you do any hand- on archaeology work. As your entries are signed off by a supervisor, it is recognised by major archaeology organisations.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Archaeology + Learning<\/h3>\n<p>We have such a huge list of courses here that we&#8217;ve created a separate blog post: <a href=\"https:\/\/archaeologyscotland.org.uk\/heritage-resources-portal\/get-learning-online-easy-wins-for-your-career-heritage-learning-special\/\"><strong>Get Learning! Online, easy wins for your career (heritage learning special)<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n<h3>Pick &#8216;n Mix<\/h3>\n<p>Some other courses that caught my eye:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Open Learn\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/history\/what-heritage\/content-section-0?active-tab=description-tab\">What is heritage?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/history\/heritage-case-studies-scotland\/content-section-0?active-tab=description-tab\">Heritage Case Studies: Scotland<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.open.edu\/openlearn\/history-the-arts\/history\/heritage\/history-how-videos-books-and-bibles#\">History how-to videos: Books and Bibles\u00a0<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Future Learn\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/identifying-the-dead\">Identifying the Dead <\/a>is a cool one about forensic science &#8211; your case to solve is a crime fiction. When I took it there were a lot of budding and published crime authors to chat to in the student forum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<li>Open University is an oldie but a goodie.\u00a0At the moment (Oct 2020), only one course covers archaeology: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/courses\/results?keyword=archaeology&amp;study_level=Undergraduate\"><strong>Classical Studies<\/strong><\/a> (Diploma or BA).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Good to know<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>You might qualify for a full fee grant for students in Scotland at the<strong> <a href=\"http:\/\/www.open.ac.uk\/courses\/fees-and-funding\/fee-grant-scotland-finance\">Open University<\/a><\/strong>, especially if you work part-time.<\/li>\n<li>The title of this course doesn&#8217;t fill one with awe, but it was amazing and taught me how to think about my entire career time line differently &#8211; and to boost my online profile: (Future Learn) <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.futurelearn.com\/courses\/writing-applications\">How to Succeed at: Writing Applications<\/a><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>That&#8217;s it for now!
