Logan Primary School’s Attainment through Archaeology (AtA) Project.
Throughout May and June 2024, P7 pupils from Logan Primary School in East Ayrshire participated in a 5 workshop Attainment through Archaeology course exploring their area’s Neolithic past.
The workshops were designed to raise pupils’ awareness of the surrounding area’s incredible Neolithic archaeology, and the skills used by archaeologists to investigate and record historic sites.
The workshops included the following activities:
- Introduction to archaeology, excavation and artefacts
- Introduction to the Neolithic and Neolithic rock art, including local site Ballochmyle.
- Soap Carving, printing, and chalk art focussed on Neolithic symbols
- An introduction to the flora and fauna of the neolithic, and the scientific techniques behind the investigation of these.
- Consolidating learning with craft activities and games
- Imagining the Neolithic world – smells and sounds, mindfulness activity.
- Introduction to neolithic timber circles and henges including nearby examples, mapping out the scale of the sites and model building.
- Neolithic storytelling, creative writing using story dice.
- Heritage Interpretation
- Each session contributed to the requirements for the Heritage Hero Award. At the end of the project pupils were awarded their Heritage Hero Detective Award.
