Trinity Academy’s Attainment through Archaeology (AtA) Project.
Throughout November and December 2024, 13 pupils from Trinity Academy’s Enhanced Support Base participated in a 5-Workshop Attainment through Archaeology project exploring local heritage sites.
The workshops were designed to raise pupils’ awareness of archaeology and heritage in the local area, developing skills used by archaeologists to investigate, record and interpret heritage sites. The workshops focused on:
- Research and Investigation: historic maps, photographs and artefact handling
- Archaeological methods: Historic Building Recording, fieldwalking
- Heritage Interpretation: craft, technology, experimental archaeology (reconstruction)
Workshops included the following activities:
- Introduction to archaeology, excavation and artefacts
- Simulated excavation with finds and site recording
- Introduction to the Mesolithic and Mesolithic flora, fauna and tools, including a local find
- Consolidating learning with craft activities and games
- Investigating maps and historic photographs
- Introduction to local heritage sites (bandstand and Abbey), mapping out the scale of the sites, re-creating finds and model building
- Heritage Interpretation
- Each session contributed to the requirements for the Heritage Hero Award, which pupils were awarded at the end of the project
