At Archaeology Scotland, we often get enquiries from people asking what do to if they have found something which they think might be of archaeological significance.
You may have found something whilst out walking, gardening or metal detecting. It’s a good idea, if possible, to record where you find the item. You can use a GPS app on your smartphone to do this and also to take photos of the item at the place you found it and more detailed up-close photos of the item.
You should also get in touch with your Local Authority archaeologist to help identify what the item might be. You can locate your Local Authority archaeologist through ALGAO (The Association of Local Government Archaeological Offers).
