Archeology Scotland has revealed its latest archaeology project, “Of Hearth and Home: Reconstructing an Ardnamurchan Blackhouse”, as part of the Adopt-a-Monument Real Wild West initiative. Community members gathered at the Kilchoan Learning Centre on January 31st to celebrate the project’s official launch, share their stories and hear more about the plans.
With the help of volunteers, local traditional skills specialist Peter Holmes and the Archaeology Scotland team will work to renovate and reconstruct two Blackhouses at Achnaha, Ardnamurchan. The project will involve rebuilding and repairing the structures based on historical photos, local vernacular, and research from 1880 to 1920. The team will also be looking at the site’s future prospects for the long term.
This project offers a one-of-a-kind opportunity for participants to learn traditional building techniques, get hands-on with archaeology and heritage conservation, and work alongside the local community to bring back a piece of Ardnamurchan’s rich history.
Funding for the project has been provided by the Natural and Cultural Heritage programme, funded by The European Regional Development Fund and managed by NatureScot, as well as Historic Environment Scotland.
