Drawing on records from Aberdeen City and Aberdeenshire Archives, this talk takes a closer look at the 19th-century poor relief system and the people who depended on it. Were Dickens’ workhouses in Oliver Twist true to life? Using parish records and plans, we’ll explore the reality behind the story and reveal what seeking help really meant in Victorian Britain.
