Wemyss Caves Pictish Carvings – Full Guided Tour and Museum 2026

Come and see the largest collection of Pictish carvings anywhere – still in the place they were made over 1,500 years ago – with the Save Wemyss Ancient Caves Society on these Sunday tours.

Located on a dramatic stretch of Fife coastline overlooking the Firth of Forth, the Wemyss Caves are home to over 50 inscribed symbols, animal figures and a depiction of an early medieval boat. The caves also house several crosses carved by the first Christian missionaries to visit the area and on the cliffs above sit the remains of medieval MacDuff Castle, once home to the Earls of Fife.

The Tour
The tour covers 5,000 years of human activity on the site through visits to Court Cave, Doo Cave, MacDuff Castle and Jonathan’s Cave.

They can only take a small number on each tour so you must book in advance. They can’t take anyone who turns up without a booking.

The Museum
You are very welcome to spend time looking round their Museum, housed in the Visitor Centre. It’s best to do so before the tour, and the Museum will be open from 1:40pm.

As well as telling the story of the caves, the Museum has displays and information on local geology and history, including later industries based in the village like mining and textiles.

Toilet facilities and refreshments are available.

Parking
Please note that there is no on-site parking at the Visitor Centre in The Haugh, which is a cul-de-sac and highly unsuitable for visitor traffic. Please park instead in the public areas on Main Street or Back Dykes, from where it is a three minute walk to the Visitor Centre. .

All tours are given free of charge, but as a voluntary organisation they encourage donations from those who can afford it. Your donations enable them to continue protecting the site so that it can to be enjoyed into the future.
