We at Archaeology Scotland are thrilled that the inaugural Orkney Archaeology Festival is part of Scottish Archaeology Month this year.
Archaeologically speaking, Orkney is one of the most important sites in Prehistoric Britain and Europe and it seems only fitting that this unique and rich part of Scotland is showcased by this festival and by Scottish Archaeology Month.

The festival runs from 10th – 14th September 2025 and is jam packed full of amazing events from behind the scenes tours at museum exhibitions, to guided walks of some of the most famous sites on Orkney such as the Ness of Brodgar and the Tomb of the Eagles which has not yet re-opened to the public.
Expert archaeologists are also hosting events throughout the festival, some of which will be recorded and available on the Orkney Archaeology Society’s You Tube channel. In particular, John Gater of Time Team fame is talking about his work over the past 30 years and recent geophysical surveys he has carried at the Ness of Brodgar, Martin Carruthers from the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) will give an update on The Cairns, and Professor Chris Morris from UHI will talk about the importance of Orkney in the Viking Age.
